Reception at Waverley - For Ages 4-5 yrs
In Reception we strive to provide a happy, calm and caring environment where the children’s learning and interests are carefully planned for, to enhance all the children’s different individual learning styles. This promotes the children’s sense of ‘awe and wonder’, enjoyment and creativity combined with our outstanding academic excellence.
The core skills of Mathematics and Literacy are taught using structured programmes and are developed through a range of practical and stimulating activities. For Reading, Phonics, Grammar, Spelling and Writing our pupils follow the Read Write Inc. framework developed by Ruth Miskin in conjunction with Oxford University Press (read more here). We also start to use other reading books for children to practise at home such as the Oxford Reading Tree, Reading 360 and Project X programmes.
We carefully plan and maintain our enriching learning environment in order to help our children flourish with every learning opportunity in all areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage (E.Y.F.S) curriculum. We pride ourselves on promoting the children’s natural curiosity, excitement and discovery for learning. There is a strong emphasis on developing social skills within our nurturing, safe and peaceful classroom environment. Our Reception children are excited and happy to come into school.
At the end of Reception (the Foundation Stage), each child is assessed against a number of key areas called the Early Learning Goals (ELG). Our environment and curriculum is carefully designed to promote children’s learning and development in order for them to achieve a good level of development, giving them the best start to their learning journey in becoming happy and successful lifelong learners.
