Music

Music is a unique way of communicating that can inspire and motivate children. It is a vehicle for personal expression and it can play an important part in the personal development of young people. Music reflects the culture and society we live in, and so the teaching and learning of music enables children to better understand the world they live in. Besides being a creative and enjoyable activity, Music can also be a highly academic and demanding subject. It plays an important part in helping children feel part of a community, providing opportunities for all children to create, play, perform and enjoy music; developing skills to appreciate a wide variety of musical forms; and begin to make judgements about the quality of music.

This is achieved by us at Waverley with children’s full participation in activities throughout their life at school. For those who wish to learn an instrument to a greater degree, there are lessons in a variety of instruments with specialist teachers, who coach them and if the pupil wishes, steer them through exams and festivals.

Singing lies at the heart of good music teaching and following on from developing the children’s ability to sing in tune and with other people, we organise many opportunities for the children to perform to their peers, as well as to a wider family audience in Class Assemblies, Christmas productions, Carol Services, Presentation Assemblies and End of Year Productions. Besides this we participate in the wider community at Wellington Chapel for the Crowthorne Carnival Concert (every 2 years) and yearly in the Choral Section of the Woodley Festival.

We encourage children to participate in these musical experiences and aim to build up the confidence of all children, as well as increase their enjoyment in musical activities.
