Gladiator ‘Steel’ Takes Waverley by Storm!

Last Friday, we welcomed a very special guest to Waverley - Zack George, also known as Gladiator ‘Steel’. From the moment he arrived, the energy was electric and the excitement from the children and teachers was clear to see.

The day began with a whole-school assembly led by Zack, focusing on motivation, mindset and believing in yourself. He shared his own journey - from being an overweight child with low self-esteem to becoming a celebrated athlete and Gladiator. His message to the children was clear: never give up, stay positive and always look after your body and mind. He encouraged the children to eat healthily, stay hydrated, move often and believe in their potential.

A particularly special moment came when Zack introduced the children to the idea of ‘glimmers,’ which are small, positive moments that spark joy in your life. Each child wrote down their own glimmer from the day, which Zack took home to read. A wonderful act of shared positivity!

The children (and teachers) were excited to learn Zack’s signature ‘Steel’ pose and were even more amazed when he demonstrated his impressive party trick - a walking handstand! Mr Mitchell bravely gave it a go, much to the delight of the whole school.

Following the assembly, the children were then given the chance to ask Zack questions. They were eager to learn everything from how he got the name ‘Steel’, to his daily diet, favourite hobby, his top event on Gladiators and whether Viper really is that scary in real life!

The excitement continued on the school field with a series of sporting circuits that showcased the children’s athletic abilities. From sack races to vortex throws, hurdles to football dribbling, everyone gave it their all. Zack even joined in the fun too! A special shout-out to Nandi, Sophie and even Mrs Ayling for demonstrating their own fantastic handstands!

To mark the special occasion, every child received an individual photo with ‘Steel’, along with a bottle of water, a sticker and a signed photo card to take home as a souvenir.

We would like to say a huge thank you to our wonderful WFA for organising such a memorable event. The children are still buzzing from the experience and it’s a day they’ll treasure forever! See photos here.
