Mathematics

Waverley pupils are confident, enthusiastic mathematicians with a deep understanding of the application of mathematics to new and unfamiliar situations. Children are encouraged to share their thinking and to both ask and answer questions in order to develop and deepen their knowledge, skills and understanding in mathematics. Core calculation skills are essential and valued and the use of investigational and problem-solving materials to allow children to apply their mathematical skills in a variety of situations. Our approach to mathematics develops logical thinking, group working, reasoning and communication skills and provides a basis for children to explore at their own pace and level of understanding. It enables our most able children to be challenged and extended without repetition, and is excellent preparation for those children wishing to sit entrance or scholarship examinations. Our mathematics programme is regularly enriched with outside speakers, mathematical challenges and national and local competitions. Most importantly of all though, mathematics at Waverley is fun!
