English

English is a core subject. Our aim is to adopt a creative and varied approach in our teaching to help pupils to develop the skills necessary to use the English language confidently and enthusiastically and correctly, whether reading , writing, speaking or listening.

Spoken English is developed in a variety of drama, role-play and speaking and listening exercises, both in lessons and through performances. Pupils are helped to read a variety of texts fluently with enjoyment and appreciation of plot, character , setting and writing styles. Pupils are encouraged to write effectively and with enjoyment for a wide variety of purposes and audiences and in a variety of styles, adapting their work to suit audience and purpose.

Correct spelling, grammar and punctuation skills are taught, together with presentation skills. Most importantly, we endeavour to nurture enthusiasm for language and literature and to stimulate pupils' imaginations, widening their experience of literature and helping them to become more confident, expressive writers and thinkers.
