Waverley Preparatory School & Nursery

Waverley School & Nursery

Reception at Waverley - For Ages 4-5 yrs

In Reception the children are gently and gradually settled into the slightly more formalised timetable, while recognising their individuality as personalities in their own right and with their own style of learning.

They are offered a broad curriculum in order to progress through the Early Years areas of development, while the Teacher works alongside well-informed parents who are appreciated as the child's main educators.

The core skills of Mathematics and Literacy are taught using structured programmes and are developed through a range of practical activities and written work. For reading, phonics, grammar, spelling and writing our pupils follow the Read Write Inc. framework developed by Ruth Miskin in conjunction with Oxford University Press (read more here). We also start to use other reading books for children to practise at home such as the Oxford Reading Tree, Reading 360 and Project X programmes.

There is a strong emphasis on developing social skills within a warm, caring, safe and peaceful environment. Children are excited and happy to come into school.

We enjoy inspiring trips throughout the year to enhance the curriculum and many compliments are received on the children's knowledge, confidence and good behaviour while outside of the school environment.

The children's contributions are highly valued and attention is given to their abilities and acquired knowledge. Their sense of curiosity informs the direction of the learning, resulting in highly motivated effective learners with high levels of achievement through success.
