German

German is a new subject offered to children at Waverley in Years 5 and 6. The aim of this is to give pupils a good foundation in two Modern Foreign Languages for future study at senior school. It provides the opportunity for pupils to learn about the German language and culture in a fun and relaxed environment.  Basic expressions and key vocabulary are taught through plenty of speaking activities, use of visual stimuli, games and songs. Grammar is introduced through books, short video clips and ICT resources. The four competencies of Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing are given equal weighting.The children are encouraged to use the target language as much as possible and they enjoy participating in the games and songs used in class!

German at Waverley is topic based and has strong cross curricular links. Topics include greetings, numbers, the weather ,my family, festivals and where you live.

 Virtual links with other German primary schools are being established so the children communicate with and can see what school life is like for German speaking children of their age.
